Categorising audience

Income bracket/status
One way to classify audiences is by their class, which is normally judged on the kind of job the main wage-earner of the householder has.

A- Upper middle class- e.g. top management, bankers, lawyers, doctors and other professionals.
B- Middle class- e.g. middle management, teachers, many 'creatives' eg graphic designers etc.
C1- Lower middle class- e.g. office supervisors, junior managers, nurses, specialist clerical staff etc.
C2- Skilled working class- e.g. skilled workers, tradespersons (white collar)
D- Working class- e.g. semi-skilled and unskilled manual workers (blue collar)
E- People at lowest level of income-e.g. unemployed, students, pensioners, casual workers.

LifeMatrix
One of the latest approaches to audience targeting has grown out of the field of Market Research. The LifeMatrix tool, launched by MRI and RoperASW, defines 10 audience categories, centred around both values, attitudes and beliefs and more fundamental demographic audience categories.
  1. Tribe wired- Digital, free-spirited, creative young singles
  2. Fun/Atics- Aspirational, fun-seeking, active young people
  3. Dynamic Duos - Hard-driving, high- involvement couples
  4. Priority Parents- Family values, activities, media strongly dominate
  5. Home Soldiers- Home-centric, family-oriented, materially ambitious
  6. Renaissance Women- Active, caring, affluent, influential mums
  7. Rugged Traditionalists- Traditional male values, love of outdoors
  8. Struggling Singles- High aspirations, low economic status
  9. Settled elders- Devout, older, sedentary lifestyles
  10. Free Birds- Vital, active, altruistic seniors
It is difficult to find out from these 2 audience categorisation (income brackets and Life matrix) because it's more likely that music is going to across both of them. However the first one is about the people 'incomes'- which means that people are decided into 6 classes : A, B, C1, C2, D, E- where A- is the higher income (e.g. people like lawyers, doctors etc) and E -is the lowest income (e.g. studnets, casual workers etc). However, the price of my music magazine would appeals to everyone but the genre of my magazine only to few of people.

Music Magazines

The first thing which i done was that I looked at all of rock, pop and classic's magazines on the current market in the U.K. What interested me the most was, what type of colours, layout, images of celebrity, the features etc. they has been used and why (their codes, connotations) so i looked the overall cover pages of each magazines to find out all these specific information's.

Music Magazine- Kerrang !

On my first magazine which called: 'KERRANG' i will talking about the positives and negatives of the cover page.
Positives:
  • MASTHEAD -white and bold writing which is on the black background ( with exclamation mark in the end)- makes it stand out as it's the darkest colour on the top of the cover page of magazine.
  • the band- they are dressed in a very dark colours -it contrasts with the MASTHEAD because it's writing on the black background.
  • we can see other title 'LOSTPROPHETS' with the same bold and white writing as we can see on the MASTHEAD.The purpose of it is to brings attention to the article.

Negatives:
  • on this magazine i can only see one negative which is that there's too much of writings and less of the images. However, i think this is a very good example of how the music magazine should be looks like.

Music magazine- Rock Sound

The second music magazine which called: 'ROCK SOUND' i will talking about the positives and negatives of the cover page.
Positives:

  • MASTHEAD: bold type of writing with a green colour on the white background- which makes it stand out well.
  • the article: there is a bold type of writing with a different colour as we can see on the MASTHEAD which is yellow -bright, very positive and happy colour- it brings attention to the article.
  • the band- they are dressed in different types of colours - which makes them stand out well.
Negatives:
  • small type of writing in each ofthe articles'
  • small images which are on the MASTHEAD

Music magazine- Rock Classic

In my finally music magazine which called: 'CLASSIC Rock' i will talking about the positives and negatives of the cover page.
Positives:

  • MASTHEAD:white and bold writing which is on the dark background- makes it to stand out well and also we can see that 'classic' is smaller type of writing than on 'Rock'- makes it more interesting and attractive to the target audience and also we can see something new and original on the music cover page of magazine.

  • the article 'SLASH FRIENDS': there is bold type of writing with a black colour on the white background - makes it stand out well and it brings attention to the article.

Negatives:

  • maybe some more images because i dont think there are any negatives on the cover page.

Preliminary coursework

Magazine Evaluation

My preliminary coursework is to produce the front page of a new school magazine, featuring a photograph of a student in a medium close-up plus some appropriately laid-out text and a masthead by using DTP (desktop publishing). Also i must produce a DTP mock-up of the layout of the contents page. The program which i will be using it's called Photoshop- to create a new school magazine for 2010.
However, i didn't want to come with one similar to those available school magazine's which are in internet so I was trying to be original and different. I then was thinking about how could my magazine looks like, which colors, connotation, convention and language i have use to appealing an audience. In comparison to other school magazines, i feel that my magazine is different and creative as i wanted.
For my school magazine i have been used a bright pink, purple and red colors on the top where is subtitle (MASTHEAD) which say: 'Vous' for french 'you'- it makes the reader feel special and also different people say it in different ways. On my layout I has been used a big picture of Dannie- she is from 6th form, where i has been used close up as it says on my preliminary task and on the backgrounds i put the titles e.g. school activities, GCSE results, new teachers in our school etc- I has been put all these stuff in my magazine which are young people interesting in it. I choice it because i think is that, what young people like to see on the school magazine e.g.- bright colors, layout, image etc. I have been used all things because i wanted to made this magazine original- which will be stand out from other magazines. I think is giving me a big plus for showing something different and also to make it popular between young people- to makes them read. I think my magazine would satisfy my target audience as it is laid out in a conventional way and the bold and bright colors involved would give a positive connotation of fun to read and also give some information's to readers about their school.
When i have been challenges design of my school magazine i found some problems with the right colors for text writing on the cover page because i put white background so I was trying to put bright colors as for example: pink, purple, red - positive colors . However, I'm really happy with my colors scheme which i has been used because i have changed it many times to find the right colors for my school magazine. If I could do my school magazine again, i would choice more different images from what i put on now.

Brief
i have chosen 'Print' because:
  • It's a good way how to improve my computer skills.
  • I did it last year- so i have some experience with this brief -print.
  • Photoshop -it's the program which i has been used to creative my cover page of magazine
  • it's wasn't really hard for me to use Photoshop.
  • also, because it's interested me the most of all four briefs e.g.: video, audio, website and print.
  • it's fun to put all my own images together.
  • it's fun to messy around with Photoshop- try to find some new things (e.g. how to change the subtitle, colors, background etc.)
  • I really enjoyed to use Photoshop.
