Final Adjustments to Gravity

As you could notice i have changed the subtitle from: 'New exclusive video' to 'New interview with Muse' where i used stroke effect and white and red colours scheme so it's match with the whole cover page and it's stand out. I was also advised to make the subtitle 'Shock! Paramore split' more stand out where as you can see, I used a stroke with the red colour, so it match with the red and yellow lines on the bottom and with other red line on the right side.
My final contents page looks a bit different as before as I was advised to put more information's about what's going to be there to make this page look more busy and important. I was also advised to make the middle person look a bit more stand out so I used a stroke and yellow colour again, as now you can tell he is the leader of T.R.B - The Rock Band.
In my final double spread page, i was advised to make the writing smaller and in the same size. I was also advised to make the text with a straight lines on the left side, to make the whole page look busy with a lot if details and information's in it. I also been told to put the page number on the right side of corner as it add to a whole page professional effect.

After having a consultations with my media teachers about how to improve and change my cover page, contents page and double spread page. I am very pleased with the whole design of 'Gravity' as it's different, original, creative, new and rocky.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

I also used 'slideshare' to make a slideshows, as it is interesting way how to show my work and also to show a different type of media. However, it wasn't easy for me to use it as i have never used this software before so then i asked my media teachers and some friends who helped me how to use it. In my opinion, this is a brilliant software as it's quick, and now easy for me to use it.
First of all i created a blog account 'Blogger' to post all my ideas, activities planning as well as my final production and evaluation. However, because i did not have any knowledge about this blog account, i had some problems with: how to upload images or videos etc. But now, i have to say that it is really easy to use (when you get used to it as me now) and also it's got some really good features as for example: to change your blogger page, writing, the date, colours etc.

I have used this memory stick to transfer my photos, and videos i have done on apple macs to computer.
I have used this camera to take a majority of the photographs I used throughout the production.

I also briefly used Google for the evaluation when i needed a picture of Green Day to answer one of my evaluation questions.

I produced my media product by using Photoshop as it simple software and also because I have been using this software for a long time. For example: it allows me to manipulate an image, editing my photos on it. Photoshop supplies to users with a tool which it simpler to use. I have used Photoshop to produce creative, original, unique design, allowing me to experiment with the software and become more confidence when i will use it. By using different types of technology has allowed me to produce a magazine which is suitable to the target audience of my product.

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

First of all i looked into different media institutions , and looking at variety of mainly rock magazines, that they published to help me find the right institution, that i would like to use to distribute my media product: 'Gravity'- the rock magazine. I feel that Bauer would be the best at distributing my product because I found out that:

  • IPC produce NME magazine and also distribute guitar magazine. However, they do not distribute many music magazines than Bauer and that's why i choose them instead of IPC. Also, they do not distribute any R&B or pop magazines.

  • Bauer's the most successful magazines are such as: Keerang! and Q. Also, Bauer publishes more magazines than any of different distributions. Other products that Bauer produce are radio stations such as: heat and kiss- which is a good way how to advertise my product throughout the radio station. I think that Kerrang! magazine have many similar codes and conventions with my magazines as you can see the similar style of fonts, rock band on the cover page, big MASTHEAD etc.

  • Bauer has over 80 influential media brands and reaches over 19 million of people.

Looking back at your preliminary task (the school magazine task), what have you learnt in the progression from it to full product?

As you can see, my knowledge of using 'Photoshop' to produce my magazines (school & rock ) has improved.
For example:
The rock magazine- I know now have to used different type's of fonts to make it stand out, and also to make it look more professional - by using drop shadows, stroke, colour overlay, inner shadow. An example of this would be the MASTHEAD on cover page: 'Gravity' where I have used all these elements. In addition to this I have learnt how to drop shadow on the yellow puff says: 'WIN! new rock bracelets ' where as you can see the black shadow- so it gives to magazine 3- D appearance. Also, my cover page has increased considerably because , I have learnt how to use layers in 'Photoshop' more effectively.

As you can see my understanding of the software has improved as well as I have produced a professional looking magazine by using 'Photoshop'.

Throughout this project, I have learnt a lot of useful information about how to produce a professional magazine, how to make the fonts to stand out, how to use different types of colours and combine them, how to drop shadow on the pictures.

What elements would you like to used in your school magazine, that you have used in your rock magazine?

School magazines- I would definitely used some techniques that 'Photoshop' offers me such as: shadow drop to make it look better, combine and play with the colours, used better and different fonts etc.

How does your media product represent particular social groups ?

I have chosen to compare this picture of Green day from 'Keerang!' with the front cover image from my magazine to explain how many magazine represents a particular social group.

As you can see in this images of the both men are nearly same in the sense that they've both got their arms crossed, they share similar facial expressions- both look serious and staring straight at the camera. Also, they are wearing similar costume- tie, black shirt, black trousers and they having the same hairstyle as well. Both pictures are taken on a white background, they are also wearing dark clothes to make contrast with a black and white colours, in the Green day picture the background is a washed out white and you cant see anything else in Connors picture he is standing in front of white curtains- to makes it look well and stand out. Billy Joe's hairstyle is longer and more darker he also has paler skin and has makeup on his face which gives him a punk look. Connor has much lighter hair and the lighting used is more duller and warmer, his skin is more tanned and both pictures were taken inside and were staged. overall i think that this represents young social group of people that are most likely to listen to rock music .

Who would be the audience for your media product?

i was thinking about my target audience and i decided to be ages between 15-19 years old, especially for people who love rock music.
The base information's about the person that is on the photo:
  • Name: Connor Dimberline
  • Age: 17 years old
  • Gender: male
  • Education: 6th form student, at Dinnington Comprehensive School
  • Interest and Hobbies: plays on guitar , paintballing, Paramore,
He will be found constantly wearing his ipod, while he may be revising, doing art work or out and about with friends. His spare time he will be discovering music, going to concerts, hanging out with friends and playing guitar. His Ipod features new alternative music like the muse, my chemical romance and the killers, you me at six and fall out boy. Most of his money is spent on concert tickets, new albums, and band t-shirts, he doesn't spend much of his money on expensive designer clothes as he likes to spend money on music instead.

potential names for my magazine

Here you can see some of ideas for my MASTHEAD. I've created my masthead on photoshop ( i was using the idea i had from my mind map)

So, i decided that the black and red version looked better than others. This is because i like the style of it and it's stand out. As you can see i used exclamation mark instead of 'i'- to make it look different and original. I also, decided that the colour scheme for my music magazine should be black and red.

However, before that I used a primary research in order to find out what people like in the rock magazines. So I asked 20 people - a young generation ( 13 girls, 7 boys) how would they call my magazine.

What name do you think is better for my magazine?

Rock Music - 5

Gravity-10

Whisper-2

Sound-3

From the research I decided to call my magazine 'Gravity' as most of the people said yes , so therefore i chose that name and iI also think that this name is the right name for my magazine.

What are my target audience about ?

  • young

  • punky

  • teenagers

  • alternative

  • individual

  • original

  • passionate

  • social life

All these types came to mind when i was thinking about my magazine readership and people who like this type of lifestyle.

my first magazine's ideas

As i've found out the right name for my magazine, Ive started to produce some possible layout ideas for the cover page of 'Gravity'.
Then, i was thinking about to create my MASTHEAD on photoshop.

My mind map

As i didn't know how to call my music magazine, I've produced a mind map with a different words and names that associated with the music.
As you can see from my mind map, i decided to call my magazine 'Gravity' with a bold writing and with black and red colours- so it will stand out. I also decided that my magazine will focus on music mainly rock, pop so it will fit with the 'Gravity' name. As the name is 'Gravity' it will pull the people in it, also it's got other meaning such as: simple, pure, strong, clear and feet on ground.

Reception Theory

Reception theory is a version of reader response literary theory that emphasizes the reader's reception of a literary text. In literature, it originated from the work of Hans-Robert Jauss (in the late 1960s. ) Reception theory was at its most influential during the 1970s and early 1980s in Germany and USA, amongst some notable work in Western Europe.

Some people are not passive -this approach to textual analysis focuses on the scope such as: "negotiation" and "opposition" - on the part of the audience. This means that: a "text"—be it a book, movie, or other creative work. It is not simply passively accepted by the audience, but that the reader / viewer interprets the meanings of the text based on their individual cultural background and life experiences. In essence, the meaning of a text is not inherent within the text itself, but is created within the relationship between the text and the reader.

Use's & Gratifications

The basic theme of Uses and Gratifications is the idea that people use the media to get specific gratifications. This is in opposition to the Hypodermic Needle model that claims consumers have no say in how the media influences them. However, the main idea of the Uses and Gratifications model is that people are not helpless victims of all powerful media, but use media to fulfil their various needs. Also, these needs serve as motivations for using media.

Academic theories- mediasphere

A mediasphere is a term used to describe the collective ecology of the world media, including:
  • newspapers
  • journals
  • television
  • radio
  • books
  • novels
  • advertising
  • press releases
  • publicity
  • and the blogosphere to include any and media both broadcast and published.
John Hartley defines it as the whole universe of media, both factual and fictional in all terms (print. electronic, screen) and all genres (news, drama) all taste hierarchies (from art to entertainment) in all languages in all countries.
It therefore completely encloses and contains as a differentiated part of itself the (Habermasian) public sphere ( or the many public sphere's ) and it is itself contained by the much larger semiosphere - that is the whole universe of sense-making by whatever means, including speech.
